Mr. Jordan Banda has worked as Community Development Officer for 7 years and as a Field
Officer with MMM since 2007. |
Why I work with MMM:
- To assist the rural poor and marginalized Malawians to have access to safe drinking
water in their areas through the support from MMM.
- To support MMM efforts of empowering the rural communities to be self-reliant by
participating fully in the implementation of the sustainable water and sanitation programs
in their areas.
Community Involvement & Personal Achievements as a Field
Officer:
With the support from MMM, the following are my achievements:
- Maximized community participation and involvement though sensitization
meetings and personal contacts with influential community leaders so that they can
participate fully.
- Facilitated the formation of the community-based institution, such as the
Zone Management Teams (ZMTs), responsible for the implementation and sustainability of the
program by maintaining the wells.
- Strengthened the sustainability of the program through assessment of
knowledge gaps among community-based institutions and trained them to ensure they have the
knowledge and skills to run the program efficiently and effectively.
What is the impact of the
Shallow Well Program?
- Increased community participation and involvement in the water and
sanitation program in the impact areas, hence community self-reliance.
- Water born disease cases have been reduced in the impact areas.
- Reduced time spent gathering water
- Increased enrollment and class attendance in primary schools because
children are healthier and less time is needed fetching water.
Why is the Shallow
Well Program Successful?
- It is cost effective compared to other protected water related programs.
- The technology used is user friendly and reliable, simple to maintain and
is found locally.
- It is appropriate for even the remotest areas where mobility is
difficult, especially with heavy machines.
- Beneficiaries are directly involved at all levels of implementation,
thereby creating a sense of responsibility and ownership of the program.
- There is direct impact of the program and the results are realized within
a short period of time.
Future needs include:
- Yearly courses for village team members to ensure they efficiently carry out their
activities, such as repairing and maintaining the wells in their area..
- Yearly surveys to verify the functionality of the wells.
- Refresher courses for FOs in community development.
- Continue raising funds for new wells and capacity building.
How you can help:
- Support a Field Officer: $12000/year (this includes salary, fuel, food
& lodging while working in the rural areas)
- Pray for the Field Officers and the Shallow Well Program.
- Tell others about MMM and its programs.
