Working Hand-In-Hand with God's People

“So that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part  suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”
1 Corinthians 12:25-26

"The Shallow Well Program is playing a very
important part in the health of the community."

Biography:

Mr. Silungwe is energetic and hardworking. He is a committed Christian and he is not yet married. He has always wanted to develop, participate and contribute actively and effectively to the field of Public and Environmental Health.

Mr. Silungwe completed his secondary school education at Katoto Day Secondary School in Mzuzu from 1997 to 2000. In 1998 he obtained the Malawi Junior certificate of Education and in 2000 the Malawi School Certificate of Education. He attended University of Malawi from 2001 to 2005 and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Environmental Health with credit.

Statement of Faith:

“I am a Christian of the Presbyterian family belonging to the CCAP Church, a member of Katawa CCAP Church in Mzuzu, a member of Katawa Christian Youth Fellowship in Mzuzu, and a member of Friends of CCAP Students Organization in Northern Malawi (FOCCAPSO).”

Why I work with MMM:

“Initially I joined MMM because it offered me a job when I needed one; however, having fully participated in the program for close to a year now, I have a reason why I am in the program. The reason is to help MMM provide protected water to the community and to help the community in accessing this protected water in their areas, through encouragement of community participation.”
Community Involvement & Personal Achievements as a Field Officer:

The time I have spent in the program as a Field Officer has been both enjoyable and educating. So far I have been able to:
Construct and install 135 wells.
Open a new Zone Management Team (the village community –based organization responsible for maintaining the wells) in the area.
Handle 12 ZMTs without problems.
Hold consultative meetings with chiefs in all the 12 Zones in a drive to build strong community support – the results are very promising.
Conduct ZMT and maintenance personnel ‘fact finding’ meetings in all Zones in a drive to find out the problems that Zones are facing and locally map out the best solutions possible, so far we are moving in the right direction.
Build community trust toward the program
What is the impact of the Shallow Well Program?

The Shallow Well program is playing a very important part in the health of the community. One thing that deserves a mention is that it is inexpensive to put in a shallow well by MMM as compared to other programs that provide the same service. This is according to the communities themselves! Building on the fact that most people do not have good water, the impact areas have witnessed a remarkable decrease in the occurrence of diarrhea disease.

Increased enrollment and class attendance in primary schools because children can draw water very fast and prepare themselves for school in time.
What is the Future of the Shallow Well Program and why is your support so important?

The future of the program remains bright. There needs to be as much emphasis on maintenance programs as on construction and installation programs.

Future needs include:
Yearly courses for village team members to ensure they efficiently carry out their activities, such as repairing and maintaining the wells in their area..
Yearly surveys to verify the functionality of the wells.
Refresher courses for FOs in community development.
Continue raising funds for new wells and capacity building.

How you can help:

Adopt a Field Officer: $10,000/year (this includes salary, fuel, food & lodging while working in the rural areas)
Pray for the Field Officers and the Shallow Well Program.
Tell others about MMM and its programs.

Mr. Silungwe is still available for 'adoption'.
