A School for Deaf Children was started at the Embangweni Mission Station with Marion Medical Mission funds in September, 1994. This school, established by the Synod of Livingstonia, Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, is the only school for deaf children in the entire northern half of Malawi and only the third in the entire country. By November 1995, there were forty-three students housed and educated by the headmaster and three skilled instructors. By August 1996, the first five classrooms, headmaster's office, 80-bed dormitory, three teacher houses, and the headmasters house were completed. |
| Each school day begins with worship as the children, teachers and auxiliary staff meet together for hymns, prayers and a short meditation. Every meeting begins and ends with prayer. Truly, Christ is the Foundation of the Embangweni School for Deaf Children. was dedicated "to the Glory of God". The dedication, attended by over 6000 people including many dignitaries (the Minister of Education for Malawi, the Paramount Chief - Chief of the Chiefs, the Regional Governor, the Synod moderator and past moderators) celebrated the opening of a school for deaf children that had been only a dream a little over two years earlier. |

Expansion has continued as funds become available. A second classroom block was begun in 1997 and was in use for Standard One students in 1998. A dedicated staff of six teachers plus the headmaster provide basic education as well as training in speech reading and lip reading for the children. Today 93 students are enrolled. Most travel long distances, as much as 450 kilometers, to attend the school. |
| Extracurricular
activities include drama, basket weaving, making tin pots and pans, and carpentry. The
school has also started an impressive tree nursery.
The children eventually will attend 10 years at the school. Imagine. Children who could not vocalize are now speaking. Children who didn't know how to use a pencil are now writing. As it says in Isaiah 35: 5,6. "Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer and the mute tongue shout for joy." Amen!! |
