It is such a joy to visit this school. The school grounds are immaculate and the teacher houses look freshly painted. The new library and administration building funded last year is complete and beautiful. Desks and benches will be built this coming year by the new carpentry class. The parents have molded 80,000 bricks for a two classroom school building. Marion Medical Mission is the only organization supporting this school and we anticipate a need for three more school buildings.
The team visited the
Embangweni School for Deaf Children which was started in 1994 with Marion Medical Mission funds We cant express the joy we feel in our hearts when we see children, who a few years ago could not speak or communicate Today they are speaking, reading lips, writing, multiplying, knitting, basket weaving and even making tin pots. The guardians and teachers provide a lot of loving care. You always walk into a classroom of happy and enthusiastic children totally focused on the lesson. There are now 6 class levels and 6 teachers. The rehabilitation of the
Embangweni (Louden) Full Primary School, built in 1907, has made tremendous progress with the initial funds given. The nursery and the junior school block is complete. What a dramatic change! How proud the teachers and students are. New rafters have been put up to support the roof and 100,000 bricks have been replaced and new windows and doors installed. The dark and dreary classrooms have been repainted and additional windows added. The Home Economics block and Senior block will be the next on their rehab agenda. We hope the 19 classrooms will be completed in 1999. Five of the teacher houses were at risk of the roof falling in because of termite damage and we agreed to make immediate repairs. The community participation is strong, providing the hardwood and brick. More help is needed.School supplies were delivered to five schools. Books were mailed by M bag via the US postal service. We have many letters of thanks.
